'Whilst it is still too early to say why this incident occurred, the police are treating it as a terrorist attack and the thought of terrorism remains at the forefront of many people's minds.

"What we do know is that the police and security services were instantly on the scene, removing the driver of the car and allowing the London Ambulance Service to treat cyclists and pedestrians who were in the path of the vehicle. The emergency services are to be congratulated on their swift and brave response. Like many others, my thoughts are with the injured and their families.

"This is a reminder that we must remain ever vigilant but continue our everyday lives as normal. My staff are safe and work is continuing in my office in parliament."
