As the days become shorter and autumn falls, the festival of Diwali is once again upon us. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity, and Matthew’s favourite Hindu god, Ganesha, god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Attending his first Diwali event of the year at the Mandir (temple) at Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan, Matthew was joined by Brent Councillors in a celebration of dancing, music and, of course, a performance by the Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Pipe Band. The event culminated in an eco-friendly light display, to replace traditional fireworks.
Matthew said: “It was a fantastic evening where I was able to play a scale on a Harmonium, watch traditional dancing performances, speak to members of the Pipe band about their recent visit to India and, of course, taste some wonderful vegetarian food.
"This time of year is gloomy as the nights draw in but the festival of Diwali with its vivid colours and lights reminds us that brighter times will follow.”
