Matthew visited Saracens' Allianz Park Stadium in Mill Hill to see how the Club is managing its sporting activities and to learn about the Club's community engagement programmes. Earlier this year the Club began work on the site after being given planning permission by Barnet Council. This decision was highly controversial and divided opinion among many local people.
Matthew said: "I did not support the planning application by Saracens to rebuild the stadium as I had serious concerns about match day disruption for local residents. Traffic congestion and parking were significant issues but following campaigns by residents and myself, one of the conditions agreed as part of the planning permission was that the Club would pay for the cost of the administration of a Controlled Parking Zone on match days so that residents do not have to pay for parking permits.
“Since Saracens began holding matches at weekends I have received some - but not a lot - of complaints about local residents being inconvenienced. While it is my role to highlight concerns where I see appropriate, I am pragmatic and acknowledge that some concerns have not been realised as was anticipated and this, of course, is welcome. However, I continue to monitor the situation and keep in touch with residents on this matter.”
