Matthew was pleased to have the opportunity this week to meet formally with the Rail Minister, Paul Maynard, to press the case for his campaign for step-free access at Mill Hill Broadway station.
Matthew was keen to bring to the Minister’s attention the results of a step free access feasibility study which had been undertaken in the second half of 2015 following a series of meetings facilitated by Matthew of representatives from Barnet Council, Network Rail, Govia Thameslink and Transport for London.
The feasibility study demonstrated the seriousness with which this issue is viewed by the Council, the train and railway companies and local amenity organisations as well as residents.
Matthew said: “Poor access is a clear gap in the quality of the service at Mill Hill Broadway which is a key station on the route into London and to Luton airport. I believe the lack of a lift prevents some people from using this station and that is not acceptable. The elderly and disabled, people with suitcases, and parents with children and buggies need to be able to access their local station with ease.”
The Minister urged that an application for ‘Access for All’ funding be submitted as soon as new bids are invited later this year. He cautioned, however, that there would not be a decision before 2019.
Matthew continued: “The Minister responded positively and was clearly impressed at the actions already taken to obtain funding for this project. Whilst we cannot be complacent, I believe the work taking place on this project will put Mill Hill Broadway in a good position when the bids are considered.”
