Matthew accompanied the Prime Minster, David Cameron, on an historic visit to the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Israel. The Prime Minister agreed to visit the country after Matthew asked him to do so at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday 20th November 2013.
In his speech to the Knesset - only the second ever made by a British Prime Minister - David Cameron spoke about the achievements of the Conservative-led Coalition Government including changing the law on Universal Jurisdiction and preventing extremists entering the UK. He also spoke of his opposition to trade and academic boycotts and his personal commitment to the religious practice of shechita. On the international stage he reaffirmed his commitment to the establishment of a two-state solution in Israel that would ensure Israeli and Palestinian people could live in security and peace.
Matthew said: "I am very pleased that the Prime Minister kept his word to me that he would visit Israel and I am delighted that he invited me to accompany him. His speech at the Knesset addressed issues of concern both within my constituency and also in the country. As such it was well received by members of the Knesset on all sides. The Prime Minister also insisted on visiting the Vashem Holocaust Museum where he took part in a moving ceremony to remember those who were murdered before telling me that he will be visiting Auschwitz later in the year."
