Matthew has welcomed the Parliamentary Report on Discrimination in Electoral Campaigning. Over the past year a cross-party parliamentary panel of inquiry has taken written and oral evidence on electoral conduct with a particular focus on racism and discrimination in campaigning. The report marks the first time that such matters have been analysed in a systemic way by parliamentarians. This is in the face of disturbing reports of misconduct which blight all political parties.
Matthew said: "As Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Jews I warmly welcome this report and the recommendations it makes. Since being elected in 2010, I have been in discussion with John Mann MP, Chairman of the All-Party Group Against Anti-Semitism, as I was aware of anti-semitic campaigning during the General Elections of both 2005 and 2010. I am pleased to have been able to contribute to this report as a member of that All-Party Group. Our country has much to be proud of in the way we conduct elections but we must provide frameworks for exposing and stamping out racist campaigning when it occurs. I believe some of the recommendations in the report could go further and I will be discussing with John Mann how this might happen.”
