Matthew commemorated the International Holocaust Memorial Day by attending the inter-parliamentary gathering at Auschwitz in Poland.
In temperatures falling to minus 10 degrees, representatives from countries including Israel, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Spain and Mongolia came together for this day of remembrance. Matthew joined Lord Howard, former Leader of the Conservative Party, and Anne McGuire MP, Chairman of the Labour Friends of Israel, as part of the UK delegation at the event at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Delegates heard speeches from Holocaust survivors, and representatives from the Polish, Israeli and Russian Governments before lighting candles in honour of those who perished at the site of the infamous crematorium.
Matthew said: "The tyranny of the Nazis lay in their efforts to remove millions of people from the face of the earth in an attempt to wipe them from history; to remove all cultural, physical and human trace of their victims in places such as Auschwitz. But the International commemoration shows us that they did not succeed. The people who were killed have not been forgotten by the generation which survived them, those who came after them, and I am sure will not be forgotten by generations to come."
