Matthew has accompanied representatives from the Canal & River Trust on an inspection of the Silkstream through Colindale.
This follows complaints from numerous residents earlier in the year that the trees along the Silkstream produce an excessive amount of pollen that covers back gardens, washing hanging out to dry and even sticks to windows. The problem is so bad that it aggravates asthma and stops people from sitting outside in the summer. The situation has got progressively worse over many years, despite previous complaints from residents.
After seeing the extent of the problem for himself, Matthew returned to show representatives from the Canal & River Trust the trees that are causing concern.
Matthew said: "Earlier this year I led a clean-up of this part of the Silkstream and have continued to monitor the state of the river and also the problems for residents living along its banks. As a result of this inspection, the trees have now been mapped and will be designated for removal or pruning in what will be an on-going programme of works. The trees removed will be substituted with varieties that will not cause the same problems which currently blight the lives of residents. During the inspection a significant amount of Japanese Knotweed was also discovered and this will be treated before it affects local properties."
