In 2010, the Government inherited the worst peace-time deficit for more than a generation and Britain was on the brink of becoming bankrupt.
Matthew said: "The Labour Party – the people who got us into this mess – had no plan for eliminating the deficit and balancing the books. This Autumn Statement, however, has shown that this Government's long-term economic plan is working. Today unemployment is falling, inflation is falling, and most of all the deficit is falling.
"I am very pleased with the measures announced by the Chancellor. They are great news for tax payers, families, home buyers, savers, small businesses and young people seeking apprenticeships.
"There are many families in the Hendon constituency who will be delighted by the news about stamp duty as well as the abolition of Air Passenger Duty for children under 12 and, from 2016, children under 16. From April tax payers will benefit from an increase in the Personal Allowance to £10,600 and savers will now be able to inherit their partner's ISA and keep its tax free status.
"Many businesses in the Hendon constituency will benefit from the doubling of Small Business Rate Relief as well as the continuation of the cap on increases in business rates. National Insurance contributions will be abolished for employers who take on an apprentice under 25.
"The measures in the Autumn Statement are what any Government should aspire to. It was galling to hear Labour MPs screaming during PMQs but then remaining silent during the Statement as one by one of Labour’s political foxes was shot. The response from the Shadow Chancellor was empty, hollow and repetitive. Labour has one economic policy and that is to introduce a so-called 'mansion tax' - a tax on homes - that would hit my constituents hard. We must never allow the same people who got us into this mess to take power again and the choice at the next election is clear – a sensible, credible and effective plan to put Britain back on track – or the re-tread Labour Party.”
