For many people in the Hendon constituency, housing remains a problem. In recent years there has been a significant amount of development in Colindale, Edgware, Mill Hill and West Hendon but more properties are still needed.
In the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor revealed that the Treasury has agreed to hand the Mayor of London control of £3.15bn in funding to develop 90,000 over the next six years. This will ensure that a third of all properties are ring-fenced for rental by families on low incomes at new “London Affordable Rents”.
The way to make housing more affordable is to build more homes. In just one year - 2015/16 - over 190,000 properties were constructed. In a whole decade of the last Labour Governments they failed to build that many homes. It is forecast that there will be 220,000 affordable homes constructed this year.
Matthew said: "For many years under the previous Labour Governments, the number of homes built declined. I am pleased that the Conservative Government has reversed that trend and the country is now building more homes than before. However, we can only continue this if we have a strong economy and that will only be achieved with a future Conservative Government."
