Speaking to NDTV during election campaigning, Matthew referred to the diverse ethnic communities which make up the Hendon constituency. Many of these communities have direct links through family and friends with their country of origin and, naturally, have an interest in those countries.
Human rights is often an issue of great concern and, asked about international human rights, Matthew referred to a debate he initiated in the House of Commons in March of this year to raise awareness of Iran's regrettable continuation of domestic human rights abuses, despite the improvements in its relations with the international community. He also spoke about worrying reports of organ harvesting in China as well as poor treatment of Falun Gong prisoners.
Matthew said: "As the UK looks for new trading partners in the wake of its exit from the EU, I do not believe we should boycott trading with nations whose human rights records are questionable - indeed, we should use the opportunity to make clear to these nations that such human rights abuses have no place in a modern world and are simply not acceptable."
