It is only right that every case of immigration detention is considered individually and kept under constant review.
Recent figures show that as of the week commencing 23 March, there were 736 people in detention and the vast majority of those are foreign national offenders. People in Hendon expect the Government to keep the public safe and maintain the lawful detention of high-harm individuals. For this I will not apologise.
There is a general presumption of liberty for all and if detention is used as circumstances change, detention is reviewed and release may then be the appropriate response.
Lawful immigration detention is necessary to keep the public safe and I will work to hold the Government to account on this issue and ensure the system remains fair and humane.
