Matthew has been pursing Transport for London (TfL) over the persistent flooding of the subway which runs beneath the A1 in Mill Hill at the end of Courtland Avenue. Sometimes the problem is so bad that the water reaches ankle depth for local pedestrians, schoolchildren and golfers who use the underpass.

TFL has written to Matthew to say that the problem is being caused by a partially blocked drainage system and that works were undertaken at the end of October to relieve the pressure. Further works need to be undertaken to increase capacity and a CCTV survey undertaken to identify exactly where the problem is. Matthew understands flooding is likely to continue as the drainage system needs to be cleared properly to enable the pumping mechanism to operate at the intended volume and TfL are awaiting recommendations from their contractor on the best way to undertake these works.

Matthew was pleased, however, that TfL has agreed to carry out weekly inspections of the subway to ensure clearance of litter and leaves to prevent further blockages and obstructions. While no dates have been advised as to when the further works will be undertaken, Matthew will continue to monitor the situation. 

Matthew said: “This is one of those small problems which causes a disproportionate amount of disruption to people simply walking underneath the road. I’m pleased that my representations have had an effect but will be monitoring the problem to ensure a permanent resolution to the flooding problem is forthcoming.”
