Matthew has visited several locations at Hendon Central to see the extent of rubbish and detritus that has accumulated behind local shops and businesses. Constituents have echoed Matthew's revulsion at an appalling mess of running water, mud, dirt, food waste and commercial waste left to rot on the ground.
Questions have been raised with Matthew about the ownership of the access road as it is served by streetlights. However, as parking enforcement is by private contractors there is a suspicion that this is a private road. Regardless of ownership, legislation exists which requires the landowner to ensure that this waste does not become a health and safety hazard and does not encourage a greater number of rats in the area.
Barnet Council should contact every local business to ensure they have a current Trade Waste agreement with a legitimate waste carrier that disposes of waste appropriately. This will reduce the amount of rubbish fly-tipped at this location.
Matthew said: "As a local councillor, I always kept a close eye on all these locations that experience fly-tipping. It is a crime that upsets residents more than anything else and I can't understand why the Labour councillors in West Hendon have failed to act on this problem. I have contacted Barnet Council to require the landowner to 'clean up' and I welcome anyone to contact me if they see similar issues and cannot get their councillors to act."
